Wayne Rooney gave Nick Robinson ''death stare'' after BBC political editor made joke about baldness
Rooney had a £30,000 hair transplant in 2011 - 18 months later Robinson interviewed him on stage while hosting the 'United for UNICEF' charity dinner
BBC journalist Nick Robinson has told how Wayne Rooney gave him a “death stare” after the broadcaster poked fun at the player’s hair.
The political editor said the Manchester United captain did not see the funny side when he asked him if he had any tips regarding his bald head.
He said he realised he had gone too far when he was greeted with an “icy stare” from the England striker.
Speaking in the magazine ‘Inside United’ he said: “I hosted the 'United for UNICEF' charity dinner and had the great honour of welcoming the whole squad on to a stage at Old Trafford.
“I interviewed [Rio] Ferdinand, [Nemanja] Vidic and Rooney.
“I’m not sure asking Wayne whether he had any tips for me whilst pointing to my bald head was a good idea.”
Robinson, 51, said that he received a “Rooney death stare”.
He added: “At the time, however, it felt like I had, perhaps, gone a little too far. Questions asked by political journalists are a bit cheekier than those asked by football writers.”
Rooney, 29, who had a hair transplant in 2011, was interviewed on stage by Robinson 18 months after the £30,000 procedure.
The reporter later tweeted: "I’ve just asked @WayneRooney for advice about dealing with my baldness. Think I got away with it but not entirely sure."
